Midweek Discussion

Does your life ever feel like you’re swimming upstream? Like everything ahead is going to be a constant battle? This week’s story reminds us God’s promise to be with his people and gives us direction for how to live on the journey.

Discussion Questions

Discussion starters for your small group, triad, or family worship time.
  • What battles are you fighting?  Where do you look for strength?  What are you relying on instead of or in addition to God?

  • The Israelites encountered numerous obstacles on their way to victorious rest. What kept them going? What keeps you going?

  • The idolatrous Canaanites escaped God’s wrath for 600 years, showing God’s patience, even with his enemies. How has he been patient with you in your experience?

  • The apostle James uses Rahab, the prostitute from Jericho, as an example of faith in James 2:25–26. What aspect of her life exhibited true faith, according to James?  What lesson is there for us today?

  • The book of Joshua repeatedly says God gave his people rest in the Promised Land (Joshua 1:13, 15; 21:44; 22:4; 23:1).  What do you think is the importance of this theme?  In what ways does God give us rest today?
