discussion questions

Conversation starters for your triad, small group, or family discipleship time.
  • God’s goal for Israel (Exodus 19:6) is the same as it is for us (1 Peter 2:9) — that we might be holy so that we represent our holy God to the world. The law is “missional” in this sense. How does that impact your view of all the rules in the Old Testament?

  • Another function of the law is to restrain evil and promote love so that our communities function well (Galatians 5:14, Romans 13:9-10). As you read the law in Exodus, what principles did you discover that can help you love other people well in your life?

  • The law also functions to point us to Christ. When we fall short, we realize we need a Savior (Rom. 3:20; 4:15; 5:13; 7:7-11). How does Jesus’ save us from our failure to keep the law?

  • What is the right motivation for keeping God’s law? What is the wrong motivation?

  • When he interceded on behalf of the people who needed forgiveness, what did Moses appeal to? How could this impact your prayer life?

  • As you read about the Tabernacle, look for items that foreshadow Jesus’ ministry. How many can you find? The Tabernacle also points backward to Eden and forward to the new heaven and earth. Why do you think this is the case?
