Discussion Questions

Questions you can use in your family worship, small group, or triad discussions.
  • Jesus wanted to define “Messiah” instead of allowing people’s misconceptions to define it. How do you sometimes misconceive who Jesus is as the Messiah?

  • Can you identify with the disciples who didn’t want suffering to be part of the plan for Jesus or for themselves? How so?

  • What are ways you are being called to take up your cross and follow Jesus? How can you deny yourself and follow him?

  • In Mark 10:18, Jesus tells the rich young ruler, “Why do you call me good?
No one is good—except God alone.” What is the point of this statement?
Is Jesus denying he is God?

  • In Mark 10:21, Jesus tells the rich young ruler to sell everything he has. Do you think this is a universal requirement of all people everywhere? If not, then what was Jesus’ intent behind this demand?

  • John 8:58 is typically seen as a strong statement of Jesus’ divinity. How so?

  • In the transfiguration, Moses and Elijah appear with Jesus (Matt. 17:1-13). What do you think is significant about this?

  • In the story of Lazarus, some people said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?” (John 11:37). Why do you think Jesus allowed Lazarus to die? Why does he allow trouble in our lives today?
