Discussion Questions

  • In the incarnation, God makes himself known (John 1:?, Heb. 1:?).  What, specifically, do we learn about God?

  • The virgin birth is such an important doctrine, it is encoded in the Apostles’ Creed. Why do you think that is so?

  • Having been through an extensive study of the Old Testament, how does that impact your reading of Luke 1:54-55 (He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors) and Luke 2:4 (So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David)?

  • Do you see meaning in Jesus’ family fleeing to Egypt in Matt. 2:13-15?

  • The text introduces some key terms concerning God’s plan that was coming to fruition through Jesus:

    • Grace: Unmerited favor and blessing. In the New Testament, this term often refers to the undeserved pardon from sin through Jesus’ death.

    • Savior: One who rescues or heals. Jesus Christ is revealed as the Savior who rescues his people from sin and eternal punishment.

    • Good news: The literal translation of the word gospel, this word refers to the message that Jesus has come to reconcile humanity to God. The good news is that each individual can accept this undeserved gift and enter into a relationship with him.
