Discussion Questions

Discussion starters for your small group, triad, or family worship time

  • Haggai confronted the people about their apathy and indifference toward the Lord, which was evident by how they set their priorities. If an outsider looked at your life, would they say your first priority was the kingdom of God?

  • In the Old Testament, the prophet Haggai preached that the people should give top priority to building God's house, the temple. In the New Testament, we are called the temple (1 Peter 2:4-5, Ephesians 2:19-22, 1 Corinthians 3:16). Knowing that, what can you do today to help build the temple of God?

  • How is today’s passage similar to Matthew 6:33 (“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”)? Why is it so challenging to put God first in our lives?

  • How does this quote by C.S. Lewis apply to what we’ve learned this week?  “Put first things first and we get second things thrown in: put second things first and we lose both first and second things.”

  • In Ezra 3 and Haggai 2, we see how nostalgia for the past prevented the people from being able to see what God was doing in the present and what God wanted for the future. How can you guard against the pessimism that can result from looking backward?
