  • In the Old Testament, Judah turned away from the Lord and toward idols. Jeremiah compared this to digging a broken cistern that can’t hold water instead of enjoying the spring of living water that God freely provides (2:13). How have you dug broken cisterns in your own life?

  • Bill said idolatry happens most often when we turn “good things” into “God things.” Do you think even good things like family and friends can become idols?  How would you know?

  • Jeremiah said the human heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure (17:9). With that in mind, what do you think of the common advice, “Follow your heart”?

  • The apostle Paul said, “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?” (Rom. 7:24). How does he answer the question, and how is that relevant to our discussion about the human condition apart from God?

  • Jeremiah speaks about a “new covenant” (31:31), pointing forward to the New Testament and Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. What is new about the new covenant?
