Discussion Questions

Discussion starters for your small group, triad, or family worship time.
  • When things are going well, do you find it easier or harder to follow the Lord? How have you seen prosperity draw people away from dependence on God?

  • People know who God is by what his representatives are like. How is your life representing his compassion, mercy and justice toward those in need? What in your life can change so that you more accurately reflect who God is in these areas?

  • Do you think of social justice as core to the gospel or as an optional add-on?

  • Hosea demonstrated vividly what Israel’s lack of faithfulness to God looked like by marrying a prostitute. How are the expectations of a healthy marriage similar to the expectations of a healthy relationship with God?

  • Hosea did not abandon Gomer, despite her unfaithfulness. What does this teach us about God’s relentless love for sinners?

  • The prophet Elijah proved that, unlike the prophets of Baal, we do not need to cut ourselves to get God’s attention. In fact, quite the opposite, we serve a God who was willing to bleed for us to bring us to him. What other lessons can you take from the lives of Elijah and Elisha?
