Discussion Questions

Discussion starters for your small group, triad, or family worship time.
  • Rehoboam’s dad wrote Proverbs 11:14, which says, “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.” How did Rehoboam fall short in the way he sought advice?  How can that help us seek advice better when we need it?

  • How did Rehoboam and Jeroboam both fall short of God’s standard that kings should have followed (Deuteronomy 17:18-20)?  What can we learn from their mistakes to help us lead better in our own lives?

  • Jeroboam used religion as a tool to keep people loyal to him.  How can we recognize when the Christian faith today is being distorted and used as a means to a political end?

  • Over the course of human history, division and infighting among the people of God has severely hampered their ability to represent God to the world.  What can you do to help make sure the church today remains unified?

  • In Romans 14:20, Paul urged his readers: “Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food.”  What issues today threaten to destroy the work of God that he wants to do in us and through us?
