Discussion Questions

Discussion starters for your small group, triad, or family worship time.
  • What character do you identify with in the story of David and Goliath? Why? Based on Bill’s sermon on Sunday, where do you now find yourself in the story?

  • What does it mean to you to fight “from victory” rather than “for victory”? What difference does it make in your day-to-day life that God has already stood in your place as your representative and fought your greatest enemies — sin and death?

  • In 1 Samuel 17:47, we get a hint at David’s deepest motivation behind his actions. How do they differ from Saul’s motivations?

  • In 1 Samuel 16:7 we read, “The Lord does not look at the things people look at.” How is this theme carried out through the rest of this week’s reading?

  • Where do you see the Holy Spirit present (and notably absent) in David and Saul throughout this week’s reading? What does that teach about the importance of God’s Spirit in our lives?

  • How does David point us toward Christ? Name as many parallels as you can find in this week’s reading.
