Discussion Questions

Discussion starters for your small group, triad, or family worship time.
  • Israel’s request for a king to lead them in battle was grounded in their need for security. What earthly things do you often look to for security? How is God a better source of security for you?

  • King Saul was full of excuses for his failure in 1 Kings 15. Perhaps, he had even deceived himself into believing his excuses. Sin blinds sinners to their sinfulness. How have you seen this true in your own life?

  • In 1 Samuel 15:23, Samuel diagnosed King Saul’s heart as arrogant, and he compared arrogance to the sin of idolatry. How was Saul’s life a picture of pride and arrogance? Why is pride a form of idolatry?

  • The apostle James says God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble (James 4:6). What can Christians do to remain humble before God?

  • Samuel reminded Saul that God does not delight in empty religious ritual if it is not overflowing from a heart that trusts and obeys him. How do you fight against meaningless, surface-level religiosity in your walk with God?
