Every week in Cascade Kids, we start with worship and creative movement. The kids enjoy this time of coming together, singing, and learning the motions to different songs—in fact, some weeks, kids get so focused on the signs and movements that they forget to sing, too! But yesterday morning, when we sang “Way Maker,” the opposite happened. As we closed out our worship time, the kids naturally lifted their hands—they were less focused on making the motions exactly as presented in the video. Instead, they were praising and singing out louder than ever before.

It was so clear that God was present with us in that space. As the kids sang out the words, “Waymaker, miracle worker, promise keeper, Light in the darkness, my God That is who You are.” It was clear that they believed it. It was so moving to hear all of their voices coming together and singing these truths about our God.

God is all of these things—daily—even when we are distracted and begin to lose sight of the true meaning of this season. He is our light in the darkness. The bridge of the song says, “Even when I don’t see it, you’re working. Even when I don’t feel it, you’re working. You never stop; you never stop working.” Honestly, this is one of my favorite songs, and I’ve sung it so many times. But hearing these words sung yesterday by the kids of our church was so moving. It is my prayer that no matter what they face in life, they will remember the truth in this song. Even when we don’t see it or feel it, God is not only working in our lives; he is with us every step of the way.

When the angel Gabriel appears to Mary, he says, “‘For nothing will be impossible with God.’ And Mary said, ‘Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word'” (Luke 1:37-38 ESV). Even when we don’t see or feel it, he is Immanuel—God with us—every step of the way.
